Columbia County is our northern neighbor, and Columbus, Lodi and Portage are all comfortable drives from the Sun Prairie shop. It is a county with real geographic variety: the Wisconsin River bends through it, the glacial edge shows up in the bluffs around Lodi and Gibraltar Rock, and the flatter farmland east toward Columbus gives way to marsh at the Portage end. Homeowners here typically have more land than their Dane County counterparts, which changes what a deck can be — bigger footprints, freestanding platforms out toward a view, pergolas over patios, and screened rooms that make evening use of a big open yard practical.

Columbus and the eastern farmland

Columbus, with its landmark Farmers and Merchants Union Bank on James Street and the Crawfish River running past downtown, sits inside our regular service radius and gets treated exactly like a Dane County job. The older homes near the historic district often have back porches that were enclosed decades ago and never properly framed or flashed; we rebuild them as true three- or four-season rooms with insulated walls, real headers, and windows that open. On the newer subdivisions ringing the city, walkout basements and taller rear elevations mean multi-level decks with intermediate landings and code-compliant stairs down to grade.

Lodi, Lake Wisconsin, and bluff-side builds

Lodi is one of the more interesting places we build. Between Susie the Duck downtown, the Merrimac Ferry crossing, and the homes stacked along Lake Wisconsin and the ridges near Gibraltar Rock, the terrain does most of the design work for you. Steep lots mean elevated decks on tall posts, sometimes with engineered beam spans and diagonal bracing, and stair runs that need switchback landings. Wind and full southern sun off the water argue for PVC or capped composite decking and aluminum or cable railing rather than wood that will need re-staining every other summer. On these jobs we spend extra time on the footing plan — rock near the surface on the ridges, and softer river deposits closer to the water.

Portage and the Wisconsin River corridor

Portage sits at the historic carry between the Fox and Wisconsin rivers, and the town's geography still shows it: low, wet ground in places, with the Portage Canal and Pauquette Park at the center and the Baraboo Hills visible to the west. Around the wetter parcels near the levee and the canal, drainage and footing depth are the whole ballgame, and we plan for saturated subgrade rather than discovering it with an auger. Portage is also where screened porches and four-season rooms make the most sense in this county — the marsh means mosquitoes, and a properly screened room turns a yard you avoid in July into the best space in the house.

Permits and codes in Columbia County

The cities of Columbus, Lodi and Portage each issue their own building permits, and the Columbia County Planning and Zoning Department handles unincorporated areas as well as shoreland and floodplain review along the Wisconsin River and Lake Wisconsin. Floodplain parcels can carry elevation requirements that affect deck height and footing detailing, and shoreland zoning limits how close to the water you can build. We check jurisdiction and overlay zoning before we quote, pull the permit, and meet the inspector for the footing check before any backfill goes in. Standard Wisconsin rules still apply everywhere: 48-inch frost footings, 36-inch guards, proper ledger flashing and lateral load connectors.
